October 1 is celebrated as International Coffee Day and with good reason. The bitter beverage is consumed by millions around the world and in various forms. From hot to cold, espresso to cappuccino, we all love the drink for various reasons. Coffee packs not only flavour but also various health benefits.
Research has been conducted across the world over the many aspects of coffee. People know coffee to have high amounts of caffeine. While some have pointed out that coffee is not good for health, it cannot be as far away from truth as possible. True, excess of coffee is known to impact your health adversely, but too much of anything is bad.
Moderate amounts of coffee, it has been seen, actually have positive health benefits. From managing weight loss to even assisting in lowering the risk of diabetes, coffee is a cuppa joy for more reasons than one.

Various researches have linked coffee with weight management and even belly fat. A study published in the Journal of Nutrition has pointed to 3. 4 per cent lower body fat in coffee drinkers as opposed to non-coffee drinkers.
The study also found out that women between 45-69 years of age who drank four or more cups of coffee 4.1 per cent lower deposits of fat in their body. Caffeine, present in coffee, is known to stimulate metabolism. The study linked this particular property of coffee to be responsible for the observations. Lowering risk of type 2 diabetes
An 2014 research published by Harvard University has even linked consumption of coffee to lower risk of type 2 diabetes. The research studied over 1 lakh respondents and their coffee drinking pattern to their risk aversion of type 2 diabetes. Research found that those who increased the consumption of coffee by one cup per day has a 17 per cent lower chance of developing type 2 diabetes.
However, The research could not clearly establish the reason for the impact. In fact, a 2018 study has linked caffeine metabolism as a genetic proponent. In the study, people who metabolized caffeine slower were found to show higher blood sugar levels than those who genetically metabolized caffeine quicker. Word of caution on International Coffee Day:
Coffee in moderation is healthy and useful. Keep the milk and sugar away and you would manage your weight much better. However, its known that higher consumption of coffee to impact your health adversely. Brittle bones and increased blood pressure is also linked to coffee. Our advice – try a cup of black coffee an hour ahead of your workout and keep the amount of coffee limited to 2 or maximum 3 cups a day.
