NEET 2025 in Pen and Paper Mode, NTA Releases Notice

Putting speculation to rest, National Testing Agency, NTA has released a notice announcing the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test or NEET 2025 examination. The examination conducting agency yesterday released an official notice confirming that undergraduate NEET examination would be conducting in pen and paper mode on a single day, as is the norm.

In the public notice, now available on the official website nta.ac.in, NTA has clarified that ‘NEET 2025 would be conducting in Pen and Paper mode (OMR based) in Single Day and Single Shift’. It has further mentioned that admission to all medical and dental courses, as well as disciplines like BAMS, BUMS, and BBMS as well as Indian System of Medicine and B.Sc Nursing for Military Nursing Service would be done on the basis of NEET score.

The notice, however, did not mention the date as to when the registration for the examination would begin. While NTA has not released the dates, it is expected that the NEET 2025 registration will begin by end of January 2025 or by first week of February 2025. NEET 2025 exam is expected to be conducted on May 4, 2025 this year. Final date and information would be provided soon.

NEET 2025 Paper Mode and Controversy

As for the mode of the examination, after last year’s controversy, there were whispers of NTA possibly shifting the examination to online mode, aka JEE Main examination. Experts had also weighed in and the Ministry of Health as well as Ministry of Education considered the possibility of shifting the examination to online mode or conducting the examination in both online and offline mode across different shifts, much like the other entrance examinations are conducted.

Needless to say, the online or computer-based test offers a heightened security and provides a seamless platform for quick result calculation and transparency. However, the logistics of conducting an examination like NEET in online mode as well as the larger question of accessibility and understanding must be considered. While the controversy of last year’s paper leak and multiple toppers makes online seem a better option, NTA has decided not to go with the transition and keep the status quo on the mode of examination.

Interestingly, the first ever NEET examination was conducted in both offline as well as online mode back in 2016. The examination was conducted twice by CBSE and the second shift had been an online examination. Once NTA was formed, it was considered if NEET could be shifted to online mode. Student protest and concerns, however, prompted Ministry of Education to announce its decision to conduct NEET in pen and paper mode only.
