Two CBSE Class 10 Board Exams from Next Year, 1st Phase in Feb, 2nd in May | Draft Policy Released

Central Board of Secondary Education, CBSE Class 10 Board Exams will be conducted twice from next year onwards. In line with the report, CBSE has released the draft policy for conducting two board examinations for Class 10 students from next year onwards. The proposed examinations will be conducted in February and May.

The central board has released draft rules and guidelines for the conduct of two board examinations from next year itself. This means that the students who have entered Class 10 this year will have an option of appearing for their Class 10 board examinations twice next year.

The draft rules are simplified below for better understanding. Official draft circular is now available on cbse.gov.in. Direct link to the official draft and link to share feedback is provided at the end of the article.

Two CBSE Class 10 Board Exams from 2026: Draft Rules Explained

  1. LOC submitted to be applicable for both the board exams
  2. 1st Phase from February 17 to March 6 and 2nd Phase from May 5 to May 20
  3. Results for CBSE Class 10 to be released by April 20, 2026 (Tentative date sheet for Class 10 2026 Board Exams included in Draft rules)
  4. LOC will be generated immediately after the declaration of Class 10 Board Exam results for Phase 1, which would be on or by April 20 (tentative dates)
  5. Students will have an OPTION TO OPT OUT of 2nd Board Exams – in other words both exams are compulsory at the onset and students have to appear for the February Exams and then need to choose NOT to appear for May exams
  6. Feb and May exams can be considered as supplementary exams for each other – students who appear only in Phase II can appear for Phase I as supplementary of the subsequent academic year but the syllabus of that year would be applicable
  7. Syllabus to remain the same for Feb and May exams of that academic year
  8. Exam centres will remain the same – no home centres will be allowed under any circumstances
  9. The date sheet will be rationalized to squeeze in the wide number of subject. From next year, only the dates for the Maths, Science, Social, English and Hindi subject examinations will be fixed – the other subjects will be divided into two groups – regional and remaining subjects. All regional and foreign language exams will be conducted on single day in one go – the remaining subjects will be scheduled on 2 or 3 days and a date will be allotted to student as per their choice of subjects
  10. Passing certificates will not be released after Phase I, only mark sheets will be made available on DigiLocker – Class 10 Passing Certificates will be issued after Phase II examinations
  11. Subject change policy also altered – students will not be allowed to change their subjects after submission of LOC. In case they wish to do so, they would be allowed to appear for that subject only in 2nd examination. Furthermore, if they appear for the Phase I exam, then they would not be allowed to change subject for the second phase.
  12. Students can be granted admission on the basis of their result after phase I examination – provisional admission to Class XI is allowed even if a student fails in the first phase of the examination.

CBSE has released a draft policy document for the conduct of two board examinations. The rules will be available on the public domain till March 9, 2025. All stakeholders are invited to go through the draft rules and share feedback and suggestions regarding the same. The final rules and guidelines will be released later after reviewing the response.
