CBSE 10th Result 2025 Soon; 5 Important CBSE Rules for 11th Admission, Subject Selection and School Change

Central Board of Secondary Education, CBSE 10th Result 2025 will be released soon now. The central board in at present under the process of compiling the result. Expected in late April or early May, the result will be released online on the official website cbse.gov.in.

Unlike the other classes, moving from Class 10 to Class 11 is often unique and different. With the biggest and obvious change being the important question of choice of subjects. Apart from these, while most of the schools offer automatic admission to Class 11 to their Class 10 students, many students also opt to change their schools.

If your child or you are also in Class 10 and wondering about the choices and rules of Class 11 admissions, here is a quick look at the important rules and guidelines laid out by CBSE in its affiliation byelaws.

CBSE Rules for Class 11 Admissions, Subject Selection, Change of School

  1. Admission to Class 11:

As per the CBSE bylaws, any student can shift from Class 10 to Class 11 in any CBSE affiliated school provided

    1. He/she has passed class 10 from either CBSE board or any other recognized state board. CBSE also recognizes NIOS (National Institute of Open Schooling)
    2. Has fulfilled the admission criteria of the senior secondary school he/she seeks admission in
    3. Submits the Class 10 Passing Certificate/ Marksheet duly signed by the designated authority
    4. Has submitted Transfer Certificate from previous school (in case shifting from one CBSE senior secondary school to another) or Migration Certificate – duly signed (in case shifting from another board to CBSE)
    5. No special permission is required from CBSE for the same, provided the admission is done before August 31 of the on-going academic session

2. Admission Fees:

Normally, when a child continues in the same school, no admission fee is charged by the schools. In case a student wishes to change the school, he/she is required to pay the admission fees as well, as per the school’s rules.

3. Subject Selection:

As per the NEP (National Education Policy), CBSE has removed the system of streams. Accordingly, students are allowed to choose any combination of subjects they so desire, provided they fit the board’s basic mandate of subject selection. Check CBSE Rules for Subject Selection in Class 11.

It is important to note that the school has the right to refuse a certain subject to the student if the student has failed the subject in Class 10.

4. Maths in Class 11 After Basic/ Standard Maths

CBSE offers two variants of Mathematics in Class 10 – Basic and Standard. As per the rules, a student who has opted for Basic Mathematics is not eligible for taking Mathematics in Class 11. He/she can, however, opt for Applied Mathematics.

A student who has appeared for Standard Mathematics is eligible to opt for either of the subjects in Class 11. Please note, CBSE has over the past three years offered an exemption to this rule. 5. School Fees:

A school is entitled to charge the full year’s fees from the students – this is also applicable in case the session begins late due to delay in declaration of CBSE 10th Results. In other words, parents are required to pay the full year’s fee for Class 11, even if the student has not attended any classes for 1 month (of April for example).

The board, however, provided a little relaxation to students who change schools in the month of July. In case the student has paid the fees for one quarter in a school and after declaration of result wishes to change the school. In such cases, if the student starts classes from July, the parent may submit proof of fees paid and seek exemption from the new school.

Apart from this, many schools offer provisional admission to Class 11 before the declaration of CBSE 10th Results. The rules for the same are different from school to school. Parents are advised to properly inform the student’s registered school in case they are planning to change. Schools, however, will confirm admissions only after declaration of CBSE Class 10 Board Results 2025.
