Hypothyroidism (commonly referred to as thyroid), is a condition wherein the body has an underactive thyroid gland. As a result, the body is not able to produce enough of the crucial hormone, which leads to various health concerns. Often the person suffering from the disease struggles with weight loss. Let us understand why it is tougher to lose weight if you suffer from hypothyroidism and what to do about it.

What is Hypothyroidism?

Before we understand the mystery behind weight loss and the disease, let us understand what is hypothyroidism. As mentioned above, it is a condition where in your body is not making enough thyroid hormone.

Thyroid hormone, among other bodily functions, also manages the metabolism in your body. Lower metabolism can lead to weight gain in people with this disease.

Is it tougher to lose weight if you suffer from hypothyroidism?

Honestly, it is tough to lose weight. But does the fact that you have hypothyroidism make it worse? The answer is – not necessarily. And yet, people suffering from thyroid often complain of ‘lower wight loss’ or ‘stuck weight’.

Hypothyroidism, if untreated, may lead to weight gain among other things. However, if the disease is effectively managed, then it would not be a concern in weight loss. Once you eat your medicine and your thyroid levels are restored, the disease stops being a concern. Then why is it tougher to lose weight due?

If you are suffering from the disease and are not able to lose weight, chances could be that you are not managing your disease well. Or, it could also be that the disease is causing increased levels of stress in your body, which in turn is could impact your weight. How to manage/ lose weight with Hypothyroidism

  1. First step would be to manage your condition. It is important that you refer to your doctor and start your medicine. Remember, it is important to get your thyroid levels in control. This may take a few months but be patient.
  2. Follow a balanced diet, as per the recommendation. There are a few foods that one may avoid like Soy as they hamper the absorption of thyroid hormone in the body. If you are referring to a dietician or a doctor, follow the suggestions as given by them.
  3. Increase activity. Hypothyroidism may leave you feeling tired and fatigued. Interestingly, the more you exercise and maintain an active lifestyle, the less tired you would be. Also, exercising is important for weight loss. This could be a brisk walk or any other activity you decide to follow.
  4. Stay positive – as mentioned earlier, your medical condition leaves you prone to increased anxiety. It is hence important for you to stay positive. Someone to talk to, following stress management could all help you in achieving a healthier body and mind.

Remember, it may be difficult in the beginning but would get all better. The key is consistency. Seeking professional assistance from a dietician or fitness expert might be something that you need. But when you do choose, ensure that you share your medical condition with them and follow the advice.
